The app allows users to link their daily activities and emotional states to their music. They can find the music they want to listen to faster, while discovering new genres and artists. The different activities and emotions are called Moods.

The app’s primary goal is to enable users to quickly find music that matches their current activity or mood. Users can also discover new music and unknown artists that they would not normally find. As a result, both users and artists benefit from the new concept, which focuses on mood rather than genre.
I drew inspiration from Billie Eilish’s song ‘lovely’ for my app design. The music video uses many blue tones that I incorporated into my app design. Additionally, the most prominent feature of the music video is a glass box that the two singers are in. I also adopted this rectangle in my app and logo design.
To understand the target audience, I created a persona that is likely to use the app in their daily life. It was particularly important to highlight the environment and emotions that the person is confronted with in order to develop useful conclusions for the app concept.
The app’s content is generally limited to three main categories: text, images, and audio. These three main content types must harmonize with each other to create an overall system. This results in the front-end app design and back-end content integration.
After creating a paper prototype in Marvel, I used Figma for wireframing an initial concept.
During user testing, it became clear that the planned swipe-up function for the mood page had a hitbox that was too small, causing users to often end up on their smartphone’s home screen. To avoid this, the hitbox was enlarged. It is now also possible to access the page by pressing on the mood box without having to swipe.
The onboarding process is solved with step-by-step navigation to avoid mistakes. The user is guided and can easily select their moods without having to use the keyboard.
Navigation within the app is fully connected, giving users the freedom to access another screen from any screen without having to go back first.
One of the app’s main features is the swipe-up interaction within the music player to directly access the mood page. The user can then directly discover new songs and artists of the current mood.
The app can also be used with a smartwatch to measure heart rate and movement. Based on this information, the app can evaluate which music might suit the current situation and adjust music recommendations accordingly.
